I love you, too, Kate!

Sep 02 2010 Published by Jon under Uncategorized

Four years ago tonight we were getting the final things ready for the wedding. I was staying at Betsy W’s house, where I left the cupcakes in my car overnight (my dreadful secret is out!), and K was staying at her mom’s house (the wedding was in her back yard). Four years later, I still think that was the best wedding ever had by anybody in the history of weddings, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

And the marriage part, too!

You are the best, Kate!

And, yeah, it’s gonna be good.

This whole potty training thing isn’t going so great

Aug 25 2010 Published by Jon under Uncategorized

C is now three years old, and we thought she’d be long-since potty trained by now; she is not. She showed some interest a year or so ago, but now we have encouraged her in every way possible – we’ve even tried bribing her with m&m’s – but it’s a no go. Most of the time, she flat-out refuses to go in the bathroom at all except for baths or to wash her hands (she looooves water).

So as I was changing her diaper this afternoon (we even switched back to cloth to try to make it more uncomfortable to have accidents), I asked her why she wasn’t using the potty. She tried giving a silly answer, but I pressed her for a real answer. She gave a flat out: “I’m just not interested.” I asked if she can tell when she is pooping: “Yes.” But is it uncomfortable to wear soiled diapers? “No.”

I don’t know what to do but be patient.

To be fair, she has had a very rough year for a toddler. I know that, and I’ve tried to give her some space. But it’s not always easy to be patient when in fact I am feeling quite impatient.

Question for music fans

Aug 18 2010 Published by Jon under Uncategorized

Question: What takes you from liking an album to loving it? And how often does that happen for you?

But then how often does that album get downgraded – or even forgotten – later on?

Really hoping the girls will sleep on the way home today

Aug 18 2010 Published by Jon under Uncategorized

My daily 30-45 minute commute was just a hassle before kids. Now that that the car is loaded down with carseats, though, the daily commute has become more of a daily adventure. It’s hard enough driving a five speed while crossing your fingers that the baby won’t wake up, it’s nearly impossible to do the same while reaching your arm into the back seat and holding a pacifier or bottle in the baby’s mouth.

And no, I don’t really do that. At least not in traffic. Most days.

Teh cuteness

Aug 18 2010 Published by Jon under Uncategorized

The three-year-old just came in asking for a “passerfier” for her little sister. I said ok but I’d like a kiss. She said “no, I’ve got to go downstairs – bibbity bobbity boo!” and hopped off towards the stairs.

Baby at work, day 4

Aug 12 2010 Published by Jon under Uncategorized

So far, this whole GA at work thing is going pretty well, I think. She is five feet away from me right now, fast asleep in her bed. She seems to be getting into a pattern of one good long nap of 2-3 hours around the middle of the day, and the rest of the day she is held by whoever can get to her first. Occasionally I get to hold her. This morning she had a long awake period when she just sat in my mom’s lap and looked around, and she hardly made a peep.

It’s still hard to believe that I now have two girls. And they’re both wonderful.

Yowza, I’m tired

It’s not that I mind being up with the baby in the middle of the night. It’s that the alarm clock still goes off at the same time. Some people can get by on only a few hours of sleep. I’m not one of those people.

But it’s worth it.

You know it’s a busy week when….

Aug 04 2010 Published by Jon under Uncategorized

I listen to music pretty much all of the time, especially at work. But I haven’t heard any tunes this week. I know I’m busy when I never get around to turning on my speakers in the morning.

How big is this dog?

Jul 24 2010 Published by Jon under Uncategorized

Leo hasn’t been to the vet in a while, so we had no clue how much he weighed. I don’t know if the photo does him justice, but I can tell you he is a big dog. He is big enough that if you saw us taking him for a walk, you’d say “you should ride that dog!” or “that’s not a dog, that’s a polar bear!” or “you should have the dog pull the stroller!” I know you’d say that, because that’s what everyone says.

Anyway, this morning we weighed him, and he is 125 pounds, even with a haircut. So there you go.

Why do I find the tv comforting?

Jul 24 2010 Published by Jon under Uncategorized

As I lie on the couch, sick at home instead of out of town with the rest of the family, I listen to music and read. That’s what I’ve done all day, except for taking the dog to the vet and giving him a bath. But I always have the tv on, even if it’s muted. If the kids wanted to do that, I’d say no. You can only do one activity at a time – either watch tv or play on the computer, not both; I’m sure the tv is not cheap to run.

Yet I can’t help it. If I am logical and turn it off, I will find myself turning it back on ten minutes later. Is it the movement in a dark house? Or is it something else – habit maybe? For some reason, I find it comforting. And I’m not proud of that.
